Learning to make bread, in this case – homemade sandwich buns for hamburgers or other sandwiches, has been a fun challenge for us this year. This is a delicious recipe you need to try!
Learning To Bake
Finding the magic in the mundane has been our tagline for this school year. What is more mundane and every day than bread.
Learning to make bread, in this case – homemade buns for sandwiches, has been a fun challenge for us this year.
Today, my 10 year old and I tackled these buns and they turned out amazing! He has always been a fan of being in the kitchen. At only 3 years old, he had already shown a passion for cooking and now, at 10, he absolutely love to be apart of the daily activities in the kitchen.
I love that unschooling opens up worlds of opportunities for learning moments like this. It is basically a homeschool science project. Learning to transform meagre ingredients into nourishing bread is such a wonder to behold.
Sandwich Buns
These sandwich buns are very versatile. If you want large buns, I would recommend dividing the dough into 8 pieces.
For a bun more suitable for hamburgers, than you may want to divide the dough into 10 or 12 pieces. This recipe is really great and can be used in so many different applications. I would highly recommend sprinkling some sesame seeds onto the buns after doing the milk wash if making them for hamburgers. I love a good sesame seed bun.
I have even used it for dinner rolls to go along with a homemade beef stew. When I did that, I didn’t flatten the balls into disks and brushed them with some melted butter when they came out of the oven.
They are so delicious.
If you want to make these sandwich buns dairy free, feel free to use almond milk or non-dairy milk of your choosing instead of cows milk. We, more often than not, use almond milk on our bread products.
